In 2006, after parting ways with Ruffryders, me and my then partner Kamel (what up K!) released an independent album called “The Emcee’s Properganda”. The concept of the album was simple. Taking it back to what made me fall in love with Hiphop at a young age in the first place: straight beats and rhymes. The lead single was a track called “Top 5 Dead or Alive”. In keeping with the theme of the song which asks the age old question, “Who’s the top 5 mcs dead or alive!?”, I came up with the concept of doing a “poll” for the video. No actors. Just  real everyday people on the streets of NY. Shot in the legendary record store Fat Beats NY, Time Square and on a corner in Brooklyn, our good friend Todd Angkasuwan (director extraordinaire) came thru and helped us capture the visuals.

Kamel, The Godfather of Hiphop: Kool Herc, myself.

If you’ve seen the video, it’s definitely worth checking out again. If you haven’t, here you go.

Here’s a few screenshots.

(3:13) “Tell me off for $2″ Only in NYC.

(3:23) I’m sure his boy Matt was thrilled to see this. I know Gin was.

(4:32) No Batman?!

(4:44) Going over the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn for the 2nd half of shooting for the day.

(4:03) Sean aka Golden Child. Fun fact: He produced the entire album. Oh yeah, at the time he was 16.

So the question I ask you is.. Who’s your top 5 dead or alive?

I’m really not sure how to rank the following men, since it really depends on my mood. But, my Top 5:

    2Pac
    Notorious BIG
    Big L
    Eminem
    Jay-Z

However, I would like to say, thanks for being the 1st. You could have been our Big Pun. Perhaps, you were a few years too early for America… Thanks for not only being the 1st Asian Boy, but more importantly, thank you for being extra gruesome on the mic.

    “Who’s the best emcees?
    Ain’t no best
    Who’s the best emcees?
    Ain’t no best
    Who’s the best emcees?
    Ain’t no best
    Top five, dead or alive
    Ain’t no best”

I love everything about this joint because the lyrics and beat brought that feeling back of how hip-hop should really be; the roots. To answer who’s the best emcees, top five, dead or alive? It’s a difficult question to answer, but base on my own preference I admire Tupac Shakur, Matthew Paul Miller, Dante Terrell Smith-Bey, Jin Au-Yeung, and Sunni Patterson.

The best Mc isn’t a person that is Dead or Alive. It’s an artist in his or her true form. Doesn’t given in to gimmicks, or sell out options. People that have followed this trend don’t make it that far, because the mainstream Dictates what is good or not, not the PEOPLE. I love Jin’s respect for the art form. I swear if given an opportunity, I wish he’d do a song with an unsigned artist. Well I’m signed just not to a major label. Jin you interested in doing a record? Please send me an email if you ever get the time. No gimmicks, nothing but what comes from the heart. thedmenace@gmail.com.

    BIGGIE
    3STACKS
    EMINEM
    TUPAC
    JIN
