A few days ago, this article was released. Needless to say, for those who follow this type of stuff it caused quite a stir. The topic of race and ethnicity can be a 50/50 when relating to the Hiphop discussion forum (particularly Asians). Should it be even a factor worthy of being addressed? Or is Hiphop strictly about your skills and one’s ethnic background isn’t even a relevant point? Depending on who you ask, you’d probably get various answers.
So with that said..Analyzing Hiphop from an Asian perspective while raising the question, who would be in a G.O.A.T. list?… oh boy. Brace yourself. Of course, with any situation where a list is being composed and rankings are taken into consideration, it is inevitable that conflicts of opinions and thoughts are bound to occur.
With that said.. I encourage everyone to take this “list” for whatever you take it for.
I gota agree with the author of said composition, “Ten years ago, a list of the ten Greatest Asian American MCs of All Time wouldn’t have been possible”. True indeed. I think what is most admirable about this particular article is how concise and well written it was. Props to you young sir.
I mean, he opened my analysis with “Jin is the single most well-known, written-about, revered, disrespected, loved and hated Asian American rapper ever.”
I said this on my twitter and I’ll say it again. I don’t think my career has ever been so well summed up in one single sentence.

Jin, my opinion is that you are the greatest asian rapper to me. And your my favorite rapper too.
So 1st I have 2say that this article is great…it brought back some memories of artist I hadn’t thought of in awhile&opened my ears2some new ones i’d never heard…So thanks for sharing..2nd I kinda have to address the race “issue” if I should call it that…So speaking as the “black girl” When it comes to Hip hop(&many other things..but I only have time to address 1 lol) black folks sometime(& by sometime I mean all the time!!)have a sense of entitlement to hip hop b/c it was our way of express ourselves when we only had ourselves to listen to it.But noone thought that hip hop would have this impact on the wolrd and now it has become a self expression for all people which is why I love hip hop so much!!!So with all that being said I feel that as asian rappers most of ya’ll are doin ur thing giving the people great music which is all anybody ever wants! So I end this long “ranting session” lol with: Talent is Talent..and hopefully one day soon that’s all it’ll be about!

Jin, toally feeling u!!! “yeah we are asian u might think nothing of it, bottom line we rhyme simpily b/c we luv it!”, I actually like this one better than “say something”, although it’s short, but somehow it’s more powerful to me. “Unity baby, let’s do it!!”, “it ain’t over, just getting starting ya’ll!” Yeah, it’s not only about Asian hip-hop, it’s about new genre of GOOD hip-hop!!
Race/ethnicity, this topic is kinda edgy. Feels like it’s always asian vs western, white vs black… but we can’t deny that our color does play a role. Asian Americans are different than others Americans, no matter u are 2nd or even 3rd generation. Our roots still affect us, can’t ignore it. Guess we should take full advantage of it and be proud of it!

Hiphop (for me) is the ability to speak your mind in a lyrical rhyme – so if rapping about your race gives you a better channel to tap into what you really want to express, why not? It’s not (always) about race, it’s about you and what you want to say… of course not everyone views it that way but you just have to stay true to yourself… we can’t please everyone.
